Introduction:

I have read many feminine books in the past, that meant to highlight the plight of women and glorify them. Many books have been written so far from the perspective of women to give them more power and strength. 'SHE: Ekla Cholo Re', however, is a story of a she-man, a gender that is barely recognized or accepted in India. It is a beautiful, short and simple story of a she-man, an individual born as a male with feminine characters within.

Plot Summary:

The story revolves completely around the protagonist 'Kusum' who is a mysterious yet simple and sensitive lady. Dr. Rajendra Chatterjee, after finishing a lecture with his students, sets out on a long drive where he meets the protagonist 'Kusum' and offers her a lift.

A casual talk begins between the two that gets deeper and deeper and gives an insight into the hard life of Kusum. Kusum has had a disturbing childhood as a female trapped inside a male body. She also falls in love with a young man but is separated by their parents since she is a she-man. She later undergoes a sex change operation and moves on in life with newly found hope, determination and strength.

Writing style:

The author has used extremely simple language in this book that even a school going kid can understand. However, since the story portrays sexes, physical and romantic attraction, it is advisable for children to read the book only under parental guidance.

The book is very short and you can read it in a matter of 40-45 minutes. So, if you are really fond of interesting, powerful short stories, this one is a must-read for you. The author has also successfully kept the suspense on throughout the book that will force you to go on reading without putting the book down.

My Perception:

In today's world, where gender, sexes and romance is highly sensationalized by the society, SHE is a book that every individual needs to read. We often tend to look down upon the third gender, like the protagonist in this book and also consider homosexuals and bisexuals as ominous. Parents often tend to desert their children born as the third sex and they are left alone to fight with the world and make their own way to lead life. SHE is a perfect, classic and beautiful story of how Kusum beats all the odds and moves on in life to fulfill her dreams, despite a disturbed childhood and a terrible heartbreak.
